Department of History

Introduction of Department

Nayagram is the major contributor to the historical life of Jangal Mahal. It can also be called the green land of history. There are ancient tribal cultures as well as mythological and historical landmarks like Tapovana, Rameswar temple, Sahashra Linga temple etc . This area can be seen as a meeting point of cultures, on one side of which are West Bengal, Orissa and on its other side lies Chhotonagpur plateau, Jharkhand. The establishment of the History department in the college in such a geographical environment undoubtedly adds a new dimension to the study of history. The glorious journey of the Department has been started since 2014 in jangal mahal area initiated by the first two teachers, namely Prof. Balaram Das, Prof. Shyam Sundar Mandal with 35 honours, 150 General students. Over the years the number of students and faculties have increased. At present the department has three full time faculty and in-take capacity of the Hons course is now increased to 47. Regular class tests and continuous assessments are conducted in the department from time to time to engage the students in the academic activities and to grow their interest in the subject. More than 70% of students of this college come from the poorest, SC/ST/OBC or first generation learner family. The department has made some decisions in favour of the students so that they do not lag behind the students of other colleges. Time to time, from various colleges and universities faculties and scholars have enriched the department with their valuable inputs and expertise on the subject. As a result every year several students have been and are getting opportunity to get admitted to the post-graduate regular course of various universities.
